First Night Newport is a go

Residents have saved Newport’s First Night celebration.

The Newport Daily News reported that donations brought in $25,000, enough that organizers said the event can go forward.

The New Year’s Eve celebration was in jeopardy after a September fundraising event backfired and the organization lost $19,000.

Producer Charles Roberts said First Night Newport events will happen at six venues and that fireworks will be set off over Newport Harbor at 9 p.m.
