Donation saves Newport Film Festival

NEWPORT, R.I.—The Newport International Film Festival will live to see another year.
The festival, which had been experiencing financial troubles and was in danger of folding, received a $90,000 donation that will allow it to operate this spring.
Alan Weiss, chairman of the festival’s board, said Wednesday that the donation came this week from a foundation that wished to remain anonymous.
The money will allow the festival to run as scheduled in June, but organizers said they expect the event will be shortened by a couple of days to cut costs. The festival started in 1998.
Regional film festivals around the country are having trouble because of declining support from donors and corporate sponsors.
