Chaka Khan kicks off Newport Jazz Festival

NEWPORT, R.I. - Grammy-winning singer Chaka Khan kicks off the Newport Jazz Festival, which celebrates its 55th anniversary this weekend.
Chaka Khan takes the stage Friday night at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. She’ll be joined by the George Duke Trio.

It wasn’t always clear this year’s festival would happen because of financial problems with the festival’s new producers. Festival founder George Wein stepped in to save the jazz festival and last weekend’s folk festival.
Among the other acts playing this weekend are Mos Def, the Branford Marsalis Quartet, Dave Brubeck Quartet and Tony Bennett.
