Caught on cam: Christmas tree breaks

MILWAUKEE—There was a bit of a hiccup Thursday morning as crews were harvesting the 95th Milwaukee city Christmas tree.

The tree is a Colorado Blue Spruce donated by Yolanda Alvarez of Bay View.

As crews were lowering the tree onto a flatbed truck using ropes and a crane, the top portion of the tree broke off.

The tree was eventually taken to Red Arrow Park, where it is standing tall, but about five feet shorter.

Originally, workers were going to re-attach the top, but instead they’re just going to do some trimming and leave the 2-ton tree as is.

“I believe that was the first time that has ever happened to us,“ said Randy Krouse, who works for the city of Milwaukee’s forestry division.

A remarkable record, seeing the city has been displaying Christmas trees for 95 years.

“It doesn’t look that bad and we should be able to shape this up and restore the crown, and it will look just fine,“ Krouse said.
