PROVIDENCE - Gas prices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts have jumped from last week, the first time they’ve gone up since the summer.
A weekly survey by AAA Southern New England finds the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas rose to $2.54, four cents higher than last week. A survey by the state Energy Office finds the price averaging slightly higher, at $2.55 a gallon.
The price is averaging about 11 percent lower than at this time last year.
Gasoline prices in Massachusetts have gone back up by about six cents per gallon after weeks of decline. The survey finds self-serve regular selling for an average of $2.49 per gallon in the Bay State. The price had been going down for the previous seven weeks.
Massachusetts is 7 cents below the national average of $2.56 per gallon for self-serve regular.
The average price one year ago at this time was $2.83 per gallon.

Just in time for the fall/winter heating bills….how predictable.
Tman—it isn’t that the country is addicted to oil—that in itself is but a small part of the problem. The real problem lies in the people who speculate on the prices of oil and cause it to spike higher and higher. They have the money to play their games, but the average person on the street—WHO DOES NOT—has to pay the price. The rich keep getting richer and the poor keep gatting poorer. That is Reaganomics, in all its glory.
Smitty…get used to it if you’re not already. Until this country detoxes itself from oil, we’re all at the mercy of the oil industry. They’ve been sucking the life (and $$$) out of the US for some time and until we wake up, it will always continue. OPEC klnows it too. We are lucky that we get gas so cheap. Look at European prices to get a hint at what we could be paying someday…...
And the average Joe gets the shaft once again.
