Foxwoods announces 700 job cuts

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Foxwoods Resort Casino has announced plans to cut about 700 jobs over the next few weeks because of the weak economy.
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which employs nearly 11,000 workers at its casino, said Tuesday that the cuts will be in addition to 200 announced in June.
Michael Thomas, the trial council chairman, said the weak economy has hurt the casino’s revenue.
“As is happening to so many organizations, the economic issues facing our nation and regional consumer economy have negatively impacted our revenue growth. Although it has taken a few months, the recession’s impact can now be clearly seen in our industry,“ Thomas said in a news release.
“Unfortunately, the time has arrived when we must face the difficult decision and align our payroll costs with current revenue levels,“ he said.
The announcement comes a week after officials at the state’s other tribal casino, the Mohegan Sun in nearby Uncasville, announced they were putting a planned $925 million expansion on hold because of economic concerns.
