The head of Rhode Island's tourism department is stepping down.

At the end of September, David DePetrillo will retire after more than three decades of work with the agency.

Tourism was a $2.4 billion industry last year and employed about 55,000 people in the state.

Mark Brodeur, currently serving as the director of tourism operations, will be promoted to department director when DePetrillo retires.
