The question should be “why NOT get rid of it?“ The only time it is ever used is on the official seal. Hey, maybe it’ll save the taxpayers money on ink and lettering??
First Columbus Day and now RI official name. What’s next that people want to remove. Get a life. I was married on Columbus Day in the State of RI and Providence Plantations does this give me an excuse cancel the event. The problem with history in this country is that if you don’t like it, change it. Most people won’t care if you do.
While we are at it, let’s just tear a couple sections out of our history books and forget it ever happened.
This is asinine, you cannot re-write history and you SHOULD NOT change the name of the state.
All this political correctness makes my sick..
NO, The name should not be changed.
Plantations referred to the large farms in the state. The Assembly shoud
have stayed focused on the present problems facing our state!!

You’ve got to be kidding me! We’re going to change the name of our State because the word plantation has a perceived negative connotation. Large farm??? When will enough be enough? With all of the issues our state faces today, why are our elected officials spending their time debating this…no wonder we’re in the shape we’re in.
