Tributes to Pell pouring in

Pell’s work in education and the arts changed forever the landscapes of those two disciplines. He also did a lot of work for the underprivileged.

His Pell grant, provided a means for millions of poor and lower income people to get a college education. His statesmanship is sometimes found lacking in today’s politicians, according to one local woman who worked with him for a time. NBC 10’s Jim Taricani takes a look at the senator’s long and distinguished career.

I was introduced to the Senator & Mrs. Pell by John & Kay Stitely when he decided to run as an unendorsed candidate for the Senate.  His was my first foray into political campaigning.
I was secretary of the Coventry committee which backed his campaign.
I have never forgotten how well received we all were at your home and how down to earth you both were.
Because of Senator Pell my youngest daughter and two grandsons were able to acquire a college education.
Thank you.
What he did for the State of Rhode Island, the country and the world in the fields education, the arts and humanities has left a mark which will not be forgotten.
He will be sadly missed by all whom he touched.

I remember meeting Senator Pell at a VFW convention held in Newport. He had a wonderful sense of humor and welcomed those of us from Providence Plantations to the State of Rhode Island. He was a champion for the poor and a true gentleman.

I want to express my sincere condolences to the family of Senator Claiborne Pell.  While a student at Providence College, I was very fortunate to briefly intern in the Washington, DC office of Senator Pell. I found Senator Pell to be very compassionate, intelligent and truly a statesman.  This experience is one that I will always remember as very inspirational. Since that time, I have gone on to serve in the public sector for twenty-five years.

Sincerely,

Marc R. Rousseau

I wish to express my deepest condolences to the family of Senator Claiborne Pell.  My late husband, Joseph L. Houde, worked for Senator Pell in Washington, D.C. in 1989 as a Legis Fellow.  Through this experience, he had the opportunity to know the Senator and appreciate the breath and depth of his many talents.  Working for Senator Pell was truly a highpoint of my late husband’s life.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Joseph L. Houde
