Town officials wary of casinos’ alcohol proposal

UNCASVILLE, Conn.—Town leaders near Connecticut’s two casinos said they worry about public safety if the casinos are allowed to serve alcohol around the clock.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun said they could be more competitive with casinos in Atlantic City if they can serve alcohol 24 hours a day.

They currently must obey Connecticut liquor laws, which prohibit selling or giving away alcohol after 1 a.m. on weeknights and after 2 a.m. on weekends.

Officials in North Stonington, Ledyard and Preston said they worry about the possibility of more drunken-driving crashes in their towns if alcohol is available around the clock at the casinos.

They said it also would place a bigger burden on their small towns’ fire and ambulance squads.
