WESTERLY, R.I.—Rhode Island emergency management officials are urging caution in Westerly after reports of highway flooding there.

J. David Smith, the director of the state Emergency Management Agency, says he’s received numerous reports of cars stranded in water during Wednesday’s rainstorm. He said drivers should avoided flooded areas when they’re not sure how deep the water is.

The agency’s emergency operations center has been activated to keep track of the situation.
