Seekonk captain honored with parade

BOSTON—The first mate of the U.S. cargo ship that was attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia in April was honored with a parade in Boston Sunday night.

Capt. Shane Murphy of Seekonk, a 34-year-old graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, took command of the Maersk Alabama after four armed pirates hijacked the boat and held the ship’s captain hostage.

With Murphy at the helm, the crew was able to resist the pirate takeover, take back the ship and sail home.

The parade for Murphy came at the end of this year’s Boston Navy Week at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Actually, he was the guest of honor at the Sunset Parade at the Charlestown Navy Yard.  It’s an annual event - for the public - that USS Constitution has put on for many years now.

It was great to see him there, and his words were a big hit with the crowd.
