National Guard breaks ground on new monument

EXETER, R.I.—A new monument under construction will honor the soldiers and airmen who have served in the Rhode Island National Guard.

The 7-foot tall bronze sculpture of a Revolutionary War minuteman pays tribute to the beginnings of the guard, which started as a colonial militia.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Saturday at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.

The $250,000 project will be funded by sponsors who purchase bricks that will be incorporated into the memorial.

Nice of them not to mention our organization sponsering this!  We’re the Rhode Island National Guard Retiree’s Association; see our website to help donate to complete this monument for your RI veterans, www.ringretirees.homestead.com.  Look for “Memorial” link near the bottom of the page; download forms to buy a brick and help us out.  Thanks.
