Kids plant garden to help food bank

More than 100 school children from the Cumberland Middle School planted a special vegetable garden on Monday.

But this wasn’t an ordinary classroom project or backyard garden.  The students planted more than 1,500 vegetable plants at the Franklin Community Farm in Cumberland.  Plants included peppers, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, cucumbers and squash.

The veggies grown and harvested from the garden will eventually be distributed to hungry families across Rhode Island, through the Rhode Island Food Bank.

Last year, more than 11,000 pounds of fresh produce was grown at this location. The goal this year is 15,000 pounds.

Want to find out how you can help, or learn more about the Community Farm?  Check the Rhode Island Food Bank web site.
