CUMBERLAND, R.I.—Police have charged an information technology director and his son with stealing new school computers and reselling them to other school district employees.
Cumberland High School’s 52-year-old IT director Robert Legacy and his 20-year-old son, Kevin, were arrested Monday for stealing at least 18 computers.
School Superintendent Donna Morelle said the district does have number of internal control procedures to keep track of the computers, but at a news conference on Wednesday she declined to reveal what the procedures are.
She said Robert Legacy was responsible for most of the paperwork associated with the stolen computers.
“This is an individual it appears was developing a situation in which he could conduct this breach,“ Morelle said.
Police and school officials also announced that 18 school employees had turned over some of the allegedly stolen computers. Cumberland Police Chief John Desmarais said none of the employees would be prosecuted by police or suspended.
Robert Legacy has been suspended without pay and was charged with 18 counts of receiving stolen goods. His son was charged with 30 counts of felony larceny.
Both men were arraigned Monday and were released on bail.
The case has been turned over to the attorney general’s office.

They are just misunderstood . lol
How come in Vermont they issue each student a laptop early on and it follows them through high school but Cumberland can’t afford more than 6 ?
Too much money is spent on teachers salaries and not enough on supplies !
Don’t worry the state is going bankrupt and the teachers 20 years and then retirement will soon be gone !
BOB Cumberland
This is rediculous. As a student of Cumberland High School in a COMPUTER REPAIR class, I have to say that we were supposed to get computers to REPAIR, which we never did. We are now in 4th quarter. And now come to find out, the guy who was supposed to be getting us the supplies was stealing the computers. That’s great. Maybe they should actually watch the serveillance tapes from those cameras that they have placed all around the campus.
Not to mention when I arrived at CHS as a freshmen there were no computers in any of the classrooms. We are now up to six, one for teacher use, five for students. We also have COWs (Computers on wheels) which are laptops on a cart that can be requested by teachers to use in their classes, so that’s where the stolen laptops came from.
The issue with this is that since Legacy was in charge of the invoices that went with these computers, I’m sure that they have been destroyed.
Legacy needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for a FELONY. I do not feel his son was any better. He knew what was in the school since he set them up to begin with.
Our curriculum already excludes computer use, they are all just dust collectors, and if you try (or dare I should say) to go near one, you get the “Don’t touch that computer!“ from the teacher. It isn’t going to get better if we have less of them.
we are all human just because someone holds power doesnt mean they arnt corruptible , i bet they’ll get a slap on the wrist justice is always fair right?
what an awesome parent!
what a jackazz!
They didn’t mean it
