FOSTER, R.I.—The Rhode Island Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals picked up almost 300 rats from the Providence Water Authority’s office in Foster on Tuesday night.

Many of the rats were found in boxes, cages and aquariums. About 208 of the 280 rats were still alive. They were found in eight containers, including glass aquariums, bird cages and cat carriers, at the office . People who drove by saw the rats and alerted police.

The live rats were euthanized individually at the SPCA’s office in East Providence. Officials aren’t sure where they came from, but they want answers.  Officials believe the rats could have been dumped by an amateur trying to run a business in the sale of feeder rats, which are used as food for snakes and other reptiles.

“We don’t know where they came from. We don’t know what the situation is. It’s a deplorable and heinous act whoever did this,“ said Dr. E.J. Finnochio of the SPCA.

The SPCA is offering a $750 reward.

Anyone with information should call the SPCA at (401) 438-8150. Foster police are still investigating.

The title of this story is inaccurate. The rats were found by a Water Authority employee, not at the actual office.

Wow, that is amazing..only one person working there?  Shouldn’t that make it a no-brainer to figure out who put the rats there.  And if there were two people there, didn’t one notice that Jethro was collecting too many pets?

I don’t get it…. how hard is it to find out who has access to this office????????? It can’t be too many. And a reward? Pathetic.
