SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.—A volunteer firefighter in South Kingstown died Tuesday after suffering a major head injury at the fire station.

The firefighter, 67-year-old Allan LePage, was an assistant chief of the Kingston Fire District in South Kingstown. He was a member of the department for 42 years.

Charlestown Police Lt. Patrick McMahon, who is serving as a spokesman, said LePage died after being flown to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.

Officials have not released details of the accident but say it occurred inside one of the apparatus bays as LePage was working on a ladder truck.

McMahon says the incident is under investigation by the South Kingstown police, the state Department of Labor and Training and a private safety consultant.
