PROVIDENCE—National Grid is seeking a reduction in electric rates for Rhode Island customers, effective Jan. 1.
A decline in generating costs, as oil and natural gas prices have retreated from this summer’s highs, has meant the utility is paying less for the electricity it purchases, National Grid stated in its filing with the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission.
National Grid is looking for a net decrease of 13.7 percent. For the typical customer that uses 500 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, that translates into a savings of about $13 a month.
The PUC must approve the request before it could take effect next year.
