Catlady—One thing I can never understand is the tendency of some people to read what they want to into a statement.  I didn’t say Europe was any safer than here—just that its roads were engineered for higher speeds.  Neither did I say seat belts don’t save lives—I said it looks like speed was a cause of this AS WELL.

I agree that when you’re driving it isn’t the time to east, or shave, or put on makeup—-or read!  When you’re behind the wheel—DRIVE.  If you have to do anything else—-PULL OVER!  That is the only SAFE way to things—ESPECIALLY yak on a cell phone!

Smitty, I lived in Germany for a year and drove on the Autobahn going 100 mph bumper to bumper.  There was an accident every time I was on it.  So Europe isn’t any safer than here.  I’ll admit I speed here, but I don’t tailgate, know the road, and wear a seatbelt ALWAYS.  Being ejected will kill you in an instant, staying in the vechicle makes all the difference.  Some speed limits in the US are archaic, not taking into consideration the higher standards of the braking and steering ability of today’s cars.  People just need to pay attention, get off the phone, don’t text message, don’t drink, don’t do drugs, when you’re on the road, you should be 100% focused on driving, and looking out for the moron beside you on the phone, shaving, reading a map, putting on makeup, whatever…..............

From the looks of this, it could very well be that speed was a cause of this as well.  It isn’t only seat belts that save lives, it’s also driving within the speed limits posted.  They aren’t arbitraty numbers, people.  They’re figured from the engineering design of the roads.

In Europe, roads are straight and curving is gradual—not so in this country.  That’s why the limit in Europe is higher than the limit here.

You’re not going to get to places much faster by driving eighty or ninety—except if you’re in a hurry to get to your own funeral.

How long does it take for people to realize that seatbelts save lives? Those people had a much better chance of survival had they not been ejected from the vehicle. Too many times have a I had friends, or known people killed when they were ejected from vehicles. Its sad. very sad. My condolences to the families of the deceased.
