Folks who are currently collecting unemployment insurance can benefit from an extension of federal extended benefits just signed by President Bush.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:8:2):
Right now, folks who exhaust their regular unemployment insurance benefits may qualify for a maximum of 13 weeks of additional federal benefits.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:8:21):
Beginning in December, the maximum time frame will increase to 33 weeks in Rhode Island.
wscorb says to NBC 10 Guest (2008-11-21 17:9:43):

People who may qualify to receive these additional benefits will be notified by mail @ December 6th
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:10:8):
Wscorb—what limitations? How can I help?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:10:51):
For those of you who do not know what TAA is, it is the Trade Adjustment Assistant Act that gives folks whose jobs have moved oversees the opportunity for free training
wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:10:58):

Do you know how much it is in Ma?Does anyone know why the retraining in Ma stopped but not in RI?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:11:36):
Certain companies have been approved for TAA. You can see a list of certified companies on our web site at http://www.dlt.ri.gov
wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:12:8):
My company is approved
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:12:11):
Wscorb, have you met with a netWORKri counselor? There may be a shorter term training program that can help you.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:12:47):
Make an appointment with a counselor at your closest netWORKri one-stop center. Visit http://www.networkri.org to find locations and directions.
wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:13:7):
I will be unemployed as of 12/31 so I am planning

wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:14:41):

PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:14:46):
if you are offered to go to a job club do go it helps so much
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:15:9):
Wscorb, don’t give up until you talk to a counselor. Some of the time frames may be flexible.
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:15:27):
Do you know how much it is in Ma?Does anyone know why the retraining in Ma stopped but not in RI?
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:15:58):
I was all ready to go to the medical assistant course but the funds got frozen (in MA)

wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:16:46):

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:17:3):
No, I don’t know why Massachusetts froze the funds—Do you know if you were getting funding from a state or a federal program?
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:18:42):
I applied under section 30 but the funds were coming from the state…If I pay I can go
wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:18:44):
there is 25 seats available at ccri if you take the pre reqs jan through june
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:18:50):
It’s a mess
wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:19:35):
ne tech will back seat you if a full paying student is available
wscorb says to PAULAP44 (2008-11-21 17:20:52):
in other words the training available is ok if you dont expect more than a job paying min wage
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:22:5):
my unemployment could stop because I’m not in school…Will by reinstated though but I can’t afford the break in unemployment checks…
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:22:28):
Paula—Sorry for the delay
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:22:33):
We had a computer glitch
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:22:38):
But I’m back online now.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:22:51):
I do not know if Massachusetts will pay for programs in RI.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:23:12):
What I would suggest is that you connect with admissions/financial aid at CCRI and/or NE Tech.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:23:28):
They may know of options that can help you pay for training.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:24:24):
I’m just hearing from a colleague that the WIA funds for Massachusetts and Connecticut have been used up for the year
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:25:25):
Rhode Island still has funding available
wscorb says to moderator (2008-11-21 17:25:48):
If she worked in RI she may have the benefit
wscorb says to moderator (2008-11-21 17:26:51):

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:27:36):
If you are an unemployed or underemployed Rhode Island adult and are interested in training to get new skills, you may be eligible for up to $5,500 in training.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:28:29):
You can visit http://www.dlt.ri.gov and click on State Workforce Investment Board link under the boards and partners button. You can read about the more than 100 eligible training programs. We update this list frequently.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:29:13):
Paula, did you work in Rhode Island?
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:29:32):
No I worked in Ma.
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:29:41):
No I worked in Ma.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:30:11):
Then I’d suggest you follow my other suggestion and maybe admissions or financial aid may be able to help you
wscorb says to moderator (2008-11-21 17:31:57):
sorry i was so negative
wscorb says to moderator (2008-11-21 17:32:9):

Even during a recession, there are always jobs opening up. At DLT (Labor & Training), we have employer services reps who try and find out about those jobs as soon as possible.
wscorb says to moderator (2008-11-21 17:35:14):
i took an accuplacer test at ccri and the hardest part was to get out of the car
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:35:23):
You should look at our weekly list of hot jobs

So many adults who think about reentering the educational arena have a similar response to yours.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:36:21):
I give you credit for making the trip and taking the test!
wscorb says to moderator (2008-11-21 17:36:25):

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:37:44):
You would be surprised how diverse the age group will be in your classroom, particulary if you are taking evening or weekend courses.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:38:3):
Teachers really love adult learners because they tend to be very focused.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:38:19):
You might end up being a great mentor to one of the “kids”
PAULAP44 says to (2008-11-21 17:38:49):
I received a lot of help in my cover letter and resume by going to my local career center
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:38:49):
And, you could ask one of the kids to be your “reverse mentor,“ getting you up to date with the latest technology—that will help you in your job search
wscorb says to moderator (2008-11-21 17:39:3):
I hope so and I will be focused.

hello… I am wondering if you have any advice for times to get in touch with anyone in the UI office. I try and constantly just get a busy signal until the office closes
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:39:52):
Paula’s advice is great—It is always helpful to have someone in the know look at your resume and help you fine tune it.

OK… thanks
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:40:33):
First of all, you are right—it is hard to get through, because the volume of calls is really high right now.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:40:55):
But, the call center has extended its hours to Saturday mornings, and the wait seems to be less then.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:41:0):
Try tomorrow between 8 and noon.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:41:24):
If you have a specific question, you can also email it to

thanks
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:41:52):
Not a good idea to send your social sec. number this way, though—only do that when you are on a secure and official UI site.
mag02920 says to (2008-11-21 17:42:6):
thanks, good thought!
mag02920 says to (2008-11-21 17:42:24):

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:43:27):
Yes. Why don’t you ask for a withholding form in your email? Then change your options.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:43:37):
You may be able to download a form from the web site, too.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:43:41):
I’ll check.
mag02920 says to (2008-11-21 17:43:42):

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:46:29):
Mag—okay, here’s the deal. You can access that form when you file an online claim. But, because you already have an active claim, you can’t grab it online right now. :( You’re going to have to send an email and someone will call you to change your options.
mag02920 says to (2008-11-21 17:46:45):
thanks so much for checking

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:50:35):
Hi Starfire. Are you currently receiving an unemployment benefits?
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:50:45):
Yes
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:51:17):
Yes
mag02920 says to (2008-11-21 17:51:48):
sorry….. NBC guest is the answer guru! I am a fellow unemployed gal… night!
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:52:55):
There are three types of unemployment benefits happening in RI right now.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:53:14):
The first is regular unemployment benefits, which has a maximum of 26 weeks.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:53:22):
Then there is the Federal Unemployment
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:53:28):
Compensation program
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:53:40):
Ok, that’s what I’m on, the first one
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:53:43):
EUC—That had a maximum of 13 weeks, but…
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:53:45):
Ok, that’s what I’m on, the first one
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:54:5):
Now the president has signed into law an extension that brings the maximum up to 33 weeks.
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:54:27):
I herd today that he signed it, No?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:54:30):
If you are on the EUC program, in early December you should learn how the extension has affected your total credits
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:54:35):
This is good news for you.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:55:33):
If you are on regular unemployment insurance (is this the one you mean?), then when you exhaust those benefits, you need to call the call center to file an federal extended benefits claim.
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:56:7):
Oh, OK, what does that do for me?
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:56:12):
Oh, OK, what does that do for me?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:56:32):
For those of you reading this who may have exhausted both your regular unemployment and your federal extended benefits, if you are eligible you will receive a mailed notification @ Dec. 6 that tells you to call in an reopen your EUC claim.
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:57:12):
OK, that helps…..kind of
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:57:17):
OK, that helps…..kind of
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:57:23):
So, Starfire, if you don’t get a job by the time you finish your regular unemployment benefits, then you need to call to file a federal extended benefits claim.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:57:27):
I know, it’s confusing.
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:57:59):
Ok, so when I call, what is the Total extension?
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:58:3):
Ok, so when I call, what is the Total extension?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:58:5):
Because the regular, federal extended and state extended benefits programs all have different requirements, you have to file a claim each time you start up a new program
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:58:15):
Should you give a three week lead time?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:58:23):
Here are the maximums:
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:58:25):
Should you give a three week lead time?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:58:39):
regular unemployment benefits= 26 weeks maximum
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:58:53):
Federal extended benefits = 33 week maximum
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:59:7):
State extended benefits = 20 weeks
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:59:13):
Wait, it that 33 + the 26?
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:59:22):
Wait, it that 33 + the 26?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 17:59:31):
As for lead time, you need to exhaust your regular benefits before you can file an extended benefits claim
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 17:59:31):

OMG, how confusing!!!!
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:0:41):
It’s more support then most states, though, so that’s a good thing
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 18:1:12):
Ok Martha, so you have to file each time, right?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:1:18):
This time last year, the maximum amount of week was 26
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:1:49):
weeks
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:2:31):

Starfire says to (2008-11-21 18:3:29):
Good answer…....
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:4:11):
Right now, Federal Extended Benefits close eligibility in late March and finish paying out in May, regardless of your maximum
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:4:16):
But that could change
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:4:38):
As for State Extended Benefits, that is triggered by a three-month moving average of the RI unemployment rate
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 18:5:26):
Wow, that is something to think about, thanks
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:5:29):
The average is high enough that state extended benefits should stick around for a while
Starfire says to (2008-11-21 18:5:32):
Wow, that is something to think about, thanks
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:5:58):

So, when you exhaust your regular benefits, you need to apply for federal emergency unemployment compensation by calling the UI call center
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:12:36):
Some of my favorite people are teachers. {smile_smiley}

I understand that very little paperwork is needed to file a Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation claim.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:16:12):
But you do have to file a claim if/whenyou exhaust your regular benefits if want to collect extended benefits
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:17:24):
Friend here had a thought for you—what about teaching adult population or in a non-profit setting? What’s your specialty? English? Science?
maxwell1 says to (2008-11-21 18:20:30):

Maxwell—If you’ve exhausted your federal extended benefits and do not qualify for state, then you will probably receive a letter @ Dec. 6 that will advise you of your status. Hope you get more credits! Sounds promising. Once you get your letter, it will tell you if you need to call to reopen your claim.
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:24:42):
Andy—Simply be gracious and thank him for the flexibility and move forward.
maxwell1 says to (2008-11-21 18:24:57):
Thank you it is very confusing.
Sue Smith says to (2008-11-21 18:24:59):
Good evening. Have been trying to get a live person but understand the flood of calls you may be receiving. I filed for unemployment two weeks ago and have not received anything from RIDLT. Any updates on how long before I will receive notification from them?
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:25:4):
Andy—and make sure you are good about follow-up communication—write a thank you note right away

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:25:48):
ftwebster—If you aren’t working yet and you are on state extended benefits, you will probably be contacted by DLT in early December and moved back onto Federal benefits.
andy D says to (2008-11-21 18:26:17):
Basic follow up already written, only specifics from the interview to add to put a realistic touch on it and not appear as a canned “thank you”
ftwebster says to (2008-11-21 18:26:32):
i was asking about march
NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:26:46):
Glad to hear you’ll be working later in the winter. If that ends, you may be able to reopen your federal or state claim, depending on the timeframe and eligibility at that time.l

NBC 10 Guest says to (2008-11-21 18:29:55):

If you want to talk to someone, you can call tomorrow from 8-noon. Waits are usually shorter on Saturdays.

If you filed Nov. 6, you will probably have something in the mail tomorrow or Monday. If not, you can email
. You should get an answer within three business days.
