WESTERLY, R.I.—Taxpayer dollars that were supposed to pay for repairs on the West Street bridge in Westerly may be wasted.
After starting the project, the state now says the bridge can’t be fixed.
The bridge links downtown Westerly to the north end and is 75 years old. Last year the town and state kicked in about $400,000 to repair it.
The federal government provided $1 million for the project. But after about $600,000 was spent, it became clear the bridge could not be saved.
The council president says there is still $200,000 left, which could help pay for the demolition. By some estimates it could cost as much as $3 million to tear it down and build a new bridge.
The town plans to hold a meeting to explain details to residents.

I hope the meeting will include a list of several councilmen/officials to be fired…
