3 accused of scamming supermarket

PROVIDENCE—Three people from New York have been charged with using stolen credit card information to buy goods at supermarkets in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Police arrested 21-year-old Kevin Baynes at a Stop & Shop in Cumberland on Tuesday and charged him with fraudulently using a credit card. Two other suspects escaped from the scene.

Baynes was then released after a court hearing.

State Police Lt. Col. Steven O’Donnell said a trooper stopped a vehicle the following day carrying Baynes, 21-year-old Mohamad Alomari and 19-year-old Sarah Theagene. Acting on a tip from store security, police searched the vehicle and found debit and gift cards that were allegedly altered to bill charges to stolen credit card numbers.

O’Donnell said police are trying to determine how the information was stolen.
