It's a creepy, yet popular tale here in Southern New England.
"It happened in broad daylight ... It was brutal, brutal murder," said Lee-Ann Wilber, manager of the Lizzie Borden house in Fall River.
Borden, a 19th century woman, was accused and later acquitted of brutally murdering her parents with a hatchet.
The murder mystery may make its way to the small screen in an HBO miniseries currently in development.
The project is the brainchild of actress and Lizzie Borden fan Chloe Sevigny.
"I did mention that we would like to get a new movie made, and she said, 'I would love to play Lizzie,'" Wilber said.
Wilber said Sevigny visited often and became intrigued with the case and, of course, with Borden.
"She's learned a lot about the case. She was asking excellent questions about it and wanted to know more. I know after she left us, she was going to New Bedford to visit the courthouse," Wilber said.
The last movie about Lizzie Borden was made in the 1970s. Wilber said she hopes the new miniseries will tell a more detailed story about Borden and the city of Fall River.
"I think it's wonderful that were finally getting a new movie made. I think she'll make a fabulous Lizzie. It will not only benefit us, of course, but the city of Fall River," Wilber said.
Wilber said she expects the miniseries to air in a series of one-hour episodes.
There has been no word on when production will begin.
