One of the nation's largest American Kennel Club dog events is returning to Providence for its annual cluster of dog shows.
The century-old Bay Colony Dog Show promotes responsible dog breeding and ownership. The four-day nonprofit event is set to start Thursday, marking the second year it has been held at the Rhode Island Convention Center after moving from Boston.
Organizers say the event poured more than $1 million to the Providence economy last year in the form of hotel, restaurant, shopping and services revenue. Some of its proceeds also fund local dog charities.
The show allows spectators to study rare and popular breeds and to find out what dogs are suitable for them.
The four-day show will be held December 9-12, 2010 at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
The Bay Colony Dog Show attracts 5,000 competitors and over 10,000 spectators and holiday shopping vendors. In addition to "Best in Show" competition, this year's show features family-friendly dog demonstrations, A Training You, To Train Your Dog event and "Bark Avenue" filled with the best holiday shopping for dog lovers.
On Saturday and Sunday, enjoy the "Meet the Breed" sessions at noon until 1 p.m.
Breeders will be available to talk about their famous dog’s special qualities, and you can find out if that particular breed is the right pet for you and your lifestyle. Also each day there will be Agility and Flyball Demonstrations. Kids will enjoy Bailey's Kids Korner with toys, magazines and coloring books, and this year's event features a chance for kids to meet Santa on the weekend.
Roam the show's "backstage" grooming areas, filled with over 150 different types of purebred dogs being primped for their turn in the show ring, and talk with the groomers, handlers and owners -- maybe you'll meet the breeder that will find you the perfect addition for your family.
A nonprofit organization promoting responsible dog breeding and ownership, Providence's Bay Colony Dog Show is managed by three AKC purebred dog organizations: Middlesex County Kennel Club, Ladies Dog Club, and Eastern Dog Club.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; tickets are $12 adults/seniors and $7 for children under 12.
