Quaker Fabric mill would be razed

FALL RIVER, Mass. -- Developers plan to knock down the empty Quaker Fabric mill building in Fall River and replace it with retail and office space.

The project will be presented to the city zoning board later this week. If approved, developers said they hope to complete it in late 2010 or early 2011.

Mayor Robert Correia said the project would create about 350 permanent jobs and 250 construction jobs. He said it is also projected to generate about $400,000 in taxes.

Developers said they plan to build a home improvement store, a restaurant or a bank, and offices on the 31-acre site.

Future development includes tearing down the Mill Store Plaza and a building leased by Cardi's Furniture.

Ron Cardi said the company wants to remain in the Fall River area and that it is looking for another location.

Quaker Fabric shut down about two years ago.
