BLOG:  Award Show Season.

I admit, I’m obsessed with award show season for film and stage, for that matter… we’re talking Golden Globes, Oscars, Screen Actors Guild, Tony Awards,  you name it…have been since I was a kid.

I try to see every film nominated.

I accomplished that so far this year, except for those movies not yet opened in Rhode Island….that’s “Albert Nobbs,” with Glen Close and “We Need to Talk about Kevin,” with Tilda Swinton.

This is what I have to say about this year’s results so far:… it’s a shame, and this is NOT a slight against Meryl Streep…she is SIMPLY AMAZING as former Prime Minister of England, Margaret Thatcher, in the film, “Iron Lady.”

 It’s a MUST SEE!!

You forget it’s Streep…ESPECIALLY when playing present day Thatcher in her 80’s…the make up is tremendous…and every eye movement and facial expression tells a story…she deserves to win…and she did win the Golden Globe Award.

That being said…so do the other present nominees and probably future Oscar nominees (in another week or so)… I have seen….

First off, Rhode Island’s own Viola Davis in “The Help.”

She plays a domestic, Aibileen, in the civil rights era drama.

The same as Streep, every movement and gesture tells her story, she doesn’t even have to speak, a BRILIANT performance…….you just know if Aibileen had all the advantages of a white woman in those times…she would have gone on to college maybe become an author,  just like the Emma stone character in the movie…

Next up,  Charlize Theron in “Young Adult.”…she plays a mentally disturbed, disparate young woman, so BRILLIANTLY, you squirm in your seat…feeling so so sorry for her…

My point; nobody has a chance against Streep; I knew that as soon as I walked out of the theatre…and it’s too bad. There are SO many OUTSTANDING performances this year…award shows are not a fair enough judge, especially this year.

At least the Golden Globes separates the categories. into best performance by an actress or actor in a comedy or musical…OR drama, they are not lumped together….the Oscars do NOT!!

So that means,….Davis, Theron, and even Michelle Williams…who gave a BRILILANT performance as Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn,” don’t have a chance against Streep as Mrs. Thatcher at the OSCARS in February.

Although Williams did win the golden globe as best performance by an actress in a comedy or musical.

To the actor category….yes, George Clooney was WONDERFUL in “The Descendants,” I loved the movie…and all his young co stars…But it’s probably going to cancel out Brad Pitt and “Moneyball,” which was FANTASTIC!!!

It’s the true story of the comeback so to speak of the baseball team, the Oakland Athletics….I’m not a big Pitt fan, but this one deserves accolades a plenty….also, Leonardo DiCaprio in “J. Edgar,” …even though the movie…was a little too back and forth in flashback mode for me…his performance was TERRIFIC…bottom line in all this…if I have one. IS...Maybe SOME DAY they could give multiple awards…or create some other category in the Oscars than just the usual best actor or actress categories, so all these great performances don’t cancel each other out…Just saying…

And IF and WHEN you have time…take yourself to the movies this year…there is SO much to see…
